This emergency fund calculator estimates a cash buffer target from essential monthly spending and a chosen number of months. It also shows the current shortfall, current months covered and the time it could take to reach the target using the monthly saving entered. The result is a planning estimate, not a personalised recommendation and not financial advice.

What this calculator assumes

How the emergency fund target is calculated

The target fund is monthly essential spending multiplied by the number of months selected. If essential spending is 2,000 and the target is six months, the estimated target is 12,000. The calculator then subtracts current emergency savings to show the shortfall and divides that shortfall by monthly saving to estimate the time needed.

Why the right buffer is personal

Emergency funds are not one-size-fits-all. A person with variable income, dependants, high fixed costs or limited insurance may want a different buffer from someone with stable income and low commitments. The calculator lets you test the number of months, but it cannot know what level is right for your life.

What this calculator leaves out

The result does not model inflation, interest, tax, debt payments or whether the money is actually easy to access. For an emergency fund, access matters. Money locked away, invested or difficult to withdraw may not behave like emergency cash when something urgent happens.

FAQs

How many months should my emergency fund cover?

The calculator lets you test a number of months, but it cannot choose the right target for you. Job security, household costs, debt and dependants can all change the answer.

Should invested money count as an emergency fund?

This calculator is designed for emergency cash. Investments can fall in value and may not be suitable for urgent spending needs.

Does the calculator include savings interest?

No. It keeps the emergency fund estimate simple by focusing on essential spending, current cash and monthly saving.
